Joaquim Manuel Sampaio da Silva, OIH, known as Quim, (pron. IPA[kĩ]), born in Vila Nova de Famalicão, November 13, 1975 is a Portuguese football player, currently goalkeeper of Sport Lisboa e Benfica in Portugal.

He started his career at SC Braga, where he had his first game during 1994/95, until 2003/04. He moved to SL Benfica in 2004 and was, at first, intermittent in keeping the goalkeeper spot at his new club, having shared the goal with José Moreira in the title-winning 2004/05 season. Next season, he started as the first-choice keeper for Benfica, but injury to him as well as Moreira saw Marcelo Moretto being signed during winter break, controversially snatching a place in the starting eleven.

Quim’s fortunes turned around at the beginning of the 2006/07 season, as new coach Fernando Santos announced that the former Braga man would be his first goalkeeper. The vote of confidence was all Quim needed, and he rarely put in a bad performance since regaining top-goalkeeper status, even when Santos was dismissed early in 2007/08.

National team

After representing his country at every level from the Under-16s upwards, and a UEFA European Under-18 Championship winner in 1994, he made his senior debut in August 1999 in a 4-0 victory against Andorra, after which he was Portugal's's third-choice keeper at Euro 2000. Quim enjoyed a short cameo as a substitute in the 3-0 win against Germany in the group stage's final round, before establishing himself as number one in the 2002 World Cup qualifying. However, a failed drugs test saw him miss out on the competition held in South Korea and Japan.

He was the second-choice goalkeeper for Portugal during Euro 2004, behind the habitual first keeper Ricardo, a situation repeated at the 2006 World Cup finals.
