Joan Capdevila Méndez, also known as Capdevila (born 3 February 1978 in Tàrrega, Spain) is a Spanish footballer who plays for Spain and Villarreal. His usual position is left back, but he is also capable of playing as a left winger. Club careerA product of RCD Espanyol youth system, Capdevila made his debut for the Catalonia side during 1998-99, in a 2-2 away draw at Athletic Bilbao, and joined Atlético de Madrid the following season. After the colchoneros relegation, however, he signed with Galicia's Deportivo de La Coruña in the 2000 summer, and would be a regular fixture in the team as left-back, first competing with Enrique Romero, then as the undisputed first-choice. In 2007-08, he joined Villarreal CF, and played in all the league games except two, for a side that finished runner-up, achieving direct UEFA Champions League qualification. International careerAn international since October 16, 2002 (Spain-Paraguay, 0-0), Capdevila scored his first goal for the nation in a Euro 2008 qualifier against Sweden, on November 17, 2007 (3-0). On February 6, 2008, in Málaga, Capdevila scored the winning goal in Spain's 1-0 win against France in an international friendly. |
